Bringing History Back to Life
A New Chapter in Saariniemi's Story of More Than 160 Years
Saariniemi, the historic forest ranger's estate, has stood on the shores of Lake Vanttausjärvi since 1862. Through generations, its buildings have provided shelter, warmth, and a place for people to gather. Each building has had its own purpose, and together they have formed a unique historic courtyard.

Once, a traditional log building stood opposite the estate's main house, playing an essential role in everyday life at Saariniemi. Over time, the building was demolished, leaving behind an empty space — and a missing piece of history.
Now, that history is being given a new chapter.
We have begun building a new traditional log hall to bring back something that was once part of Saariniemi's historic courtyard. The new building will rise opposite the estate's old main house, which we have carefully restored over the years.
The building honours Saariniemi's original architectural heritage, incorporating authentic logs dating back to the 1890s. In this way, wood more than 130 years old is given a new life, allowing the craftsmanship of past generations to continue its story.
We are not simply building something new. We want to bring back something that once belonged here.
The new log hall will become a warm and atmospheric gathering place where history and the present meet. We want to create a place where time slows down, people gather around the same table, and new memories are made — just as they have been at Saariniemi for generations.
Honouring the Past, Building the Future

To us, the new log hall is much more than a building.
It is a bridge between past and future generations. It is a tribute to those who lived and worked at Saariniemi before us. At the same time, it is a promise that the story of this extraordinary place will continue.
We hope that even decades from now, people will gather around the same table in the log hall, share stories, celebrate life's meaningful moments, and experience the same warmth that Saariniemi's buildings have offered for more than a century and a half.
Because history does not live in buildings alone.
It lives in people, in encounters, and in the memories created within their walls.
A Meaningful Recognition of Our Long-Term Commitment
Preserving Saariniemi's historic architectural heritage has been close to our hearts for many years.
We have carefully renovated and restored the estate's old buildings, respecting their original character and history. This work has been carried out with dedication, great love, and, above all, a deep belief that valuable cultural heritage deserves to be preserved for future generations.
The Lapland Centre for Economic Development has granted funding from the Just Transition Fund (JTF) to support the construction of the new log hall and the development of our activities. We see this positive funding decision as a meaningful recognition of the long-term work we have already undertaken to preserve and develop Saariniemi's historic environment. The total project cost is approximately €200,000, of which €85,494 is provided through the grant. The building is scheduled for completion by the end of July 2028.
With this funding, we can take the next significant step in developing Saariniemi. The new log hall will create opportunities for year-round tourism, cultural events, and strengthening the vitality of the surrounding region.
