A Rare Living Heritage in Finnish Lapland

By the shores of Lake Vanttausjärvi near Rovaniemi lies Saariniemi Estate, a peaceful private peninsula where history, nature and authentic rural life come together.
Founded in 1862 as the home of a forest ranger, Saariniemi has witnessed some of the most significant chapters of Finnish history. Through independence, war and decades of change, the estate has remained part of the landscape and local community.
Saariniemi is one of the very few historic estates in Finnish Lapland that survived the destruction of the Second World War. Passed down through generations and carefully restored, it remains a living part of Lapland's cultural heritage. Set on a private peninsula surrounded by the waters of Lake Vanttausjärvi, Saariniemi offers a rare combination of history, authenticity, privacy and nature that is increasingly difficult to find in today's world.
Today, Saariniemi Estate welcomes visitors from around the world who seek privacy, authenticity and meaningful experiences. Guests can immerse themselves in genuine Lapland heritage, peaceful lakeside nature and the warmth of Finnish hospitality while enjoying a level of personal service that reflects the values of quiet luxury.
Restoring a Piece of History
Saariniemi's story could have ended long ago.
After standing empty for nearly two decades, the estate had fallen into disrepair. When we arrived in 2017, we saw more than old buildings and weathered walls. We saw history, craftsmanship and the possibility of bringing a remarkable place back to life.
Using traditional building methods and respecting the original structures, we have carefully restored the estate while preserving its character and spirit.
Our restoration work has received national recognition, including:
• The Hurrikas Prize from the Lapland Building Heritage Association (2020)
• The Honor Plate from the Traditional Yeoman Culture Association of Finland (2021)
Today Saariniemi stands as a living example of how cultural heritage can be preserved and shared with future generations.

Our Private Peninsula
Saariniemi Estate is located on a private peninsula surrounded by forests, fields and the waters of Lake Vanttausjärvi.
Within walking distance of one another are the historic estate, the rustic Barn Chapel and our lakeside accommodations. Together they create a peaceful destination where guests can experience privacy, space and the changing seasons of Finnish Lapland.
Here, silence is not an attraction — it is simply part of everyday life.

Life at Saariniemi
We Love How We Live — and We Live How We Love
For us, Saariniemi is more than a destination. It is home.
We live here year-round with our animals, surrounded by nature and the rhythm of the seasons.
Finnsheep and Kainuu Grey sheep graze on traditional heritage meadows, helping to maintain biodiversity and preserve valuable cultural landscapes. Free-ranging country chickens, curious cats and the wildlife of the peninsula are all part of daily life.
The surrounding nature is rich with birds, wild berries, mushrooms and the quiet beauty of the Arctic seasons.
Life follows the seasons. Summer brings endless light and lakeside evenings, autumn fills the forests with berries and mushrooms, winter covers the landscape in silence, and spring awakens nature once again.
For us, Saariniemi is not only a place to visit. It is a way of life.

Sustainability and Responsibility
Sustainability is not a trend for us — it is a way of life.
We care for our land, animals and cultural heritage through traditional living, biodiversity conservation and responsible tourism practices. We promote equality and non-discrimination in all our activities, welcoming every guest without prejudice.
Our work has been recognised through several certifications and quality programmes, including:
• Sustainable Travel Finland
• ECEAT Finland
• Green Care LuontoVoima
We follow Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) principles.
We believe that responsible tourism means preserving nature and what makes a place special while sharing it respectfully with others.

Welcome to Saariniemi Estate
More than a restored estate, Saariniemi is a living connection between past and present.
It is a place where traditions continue, nature sets the pace and meaningful experiences grow from authenticity.
Welcome to Saariniemi Estate.
Welcome to a rare kind of Lapland.
